Ryan O'Neill

Ryan O’Neill is a public representative, community advocate and SDLP activist based in Mid Ulster. Rooted in the local community, Ryan’s approach to politics is practical, people-focused and grounded in listening to the everyday concerns of residents, families, workers and community groups.

Ryan has been active in local campaigning across Moneymore, Magherafelt and the wider Mid Ulster area, raising issues that directly impact people’s quality of life. His work has included campaigning for the Moneymore Bypass, pushing for improvements to local roads, footpaths and public spaces, highlighting concerns around mobile phone signal in Magherafelt, and working with residents on issues such as private estate maintenance, rural services and community facilities.

He has also been involved in supporting local sports, recreation and community projects, including work around Moneymore Recreation Centre, improved access to shared facilities, and support for local groups such as netball, basketball and youth organisations. Ryan believes that strong communities need proper investment in spaces and services that bring people together, support wellbeing and create opportunities locally.

A key part of Ryan’s community involvement has been his work with The Old School in Moneymore, helping to restore and develop the building as a welcoming community hub. Through this work, he has supported efforts around governance, fundraising, community engagement and long-term planning, with the aim of creating a space that serves people of all ages and backgrounds.

Ryan is also interested in expanding community access to learning, reading and cultural opportunities, including the development of public library provision and local spaces where people can access books, information, digital support and lifelong learning. He believes rural communities should not be left behind when it comes to access to education, culture and shared public services.

Ryan’s policy interests include education, rural regeneration, infrastructure, housing, public services, council accountability and value for money. As a school governor, he has a strong interest in ensuring children and young people have the support, opportunities and pathways they need to thrive. He is particularly committed to improving provision for children with additional needs and ensuring families are listened to in education policy.

Ryan is passionate about the SDLP’s vision for a New Ireland and about building something new: a shared, inclusive and ambitious future for everyone who calls this island home. For Ryan, that work is not separate from the issues people face today. He believes that while we plan for a better future, politics must also improve lives in the here and now through better services, stronger communities, fairer opportunities and practical delivery.

Ryan’s politics are shaped by a belief in delivery, honesty and common sense. He wants to see public representatives focus on the issues people raise at their doors, around their kitchen tables and in their communities. Whether it is roads, schools, services, rural investment, community facilities or the future of this island, Ryan believes politics should be about giving people a voice and turning concern into action.
